Have you ever been so angry or hurt that you wanted to bestow God with some choice words from the depths of your emotional turmoil?
I know I have.
Sometimes we think that God only wants to hear perfectly put-together words or that we can’t get too expressive or emotional with Him.
Not true at all.
He wants to hear all we have to say, He wants our honesty, the full depth of our thoughts and emotions, our whole heart and soul.
And He is safe to trust with all of that.
He can handle it.
Jasper Ivan Iturriaga elaborates on this so beautifully:
“He understands.
When David grieves he usually ends his psalm with praise but Psalms 39 ended with something that sounds theologically incorrect.
He said:
Hear my prayer, O Lord! Listen to my cries for help! Don’t ignore my tears...
Leave me alone so I can smile again before I am gone and exist no more.
-Psalm 39:12-13
The psalmist is asking God to leave him alone so he can have a little bit of peace before he dies. That doesn’t sound right. This is not something we are taught to say when we pray to God. Just doesn’t sound theologically correct.
But think about it.
God puts David’s prayer of desperation in scripture to give us an example that during our darkest moments, when doubts assail that it is safe to pray like this to God. It is safe to pour our deepest feelings to Jesus.
Our tears, grief and discouragement belong to Him.
Jesus is a safe place to go to. Go tell Him.
He understands.”
