This sweet dog (a German Shepherd named Shepherd, lol) was part of our family for 13 years. One day after a family outing, I sat in the back of the car with him on the way home. There were no seats, so we were both on the same level. At some point he noticed that my shoelaces were infested with small thorns. This was in Oklahoma, so the thorns were little green balls with spikes that could easily make you regret ever walking outside barefoot.
Without any encouragement from me, Shepherd began sniffing my shoes. When he felt the thorns, he started pulling them out carefully with his teeth and then spitting them out on the car floor. He did this all the way home and I arrived at my final destination with clean shoes and a warm heart.
It’s been many years since Shepherd passed away, but I always remember that moment with him. Sometimes he was a pain and a troublemaker, but he also was a crazy, loving companion and protector.
If an animal can do a caring act without being asked, we have little excuse.
God knew we needed these fur angels to show us love and teach us how to love.
